π Ingredients
-
70 cl (approx. 24 fl oz) white rum (40% or 50% ABV, such as French Caribbean rhum agricole or traditional white rum)
-
1 organic orange (or 2 organic clementines)
-
2 cinnamon sticks
-
2 vanilla beans (split lengthwise)
-
2 star anise pods
-
1/2 tsp whole cloves (about 3 to 4 cloves)
-
80 to 100 g liquid cane sugar (or unrefined sugar like Muscovado for extra richness)
π₯£ Instructions
-
Prepare the fruit: Wash the organic orange thoroughly. Peel wide strips of zest (avoiding the bitter white pith) and cut the orange flesh into wedges.
-
Assemble: In a large airtight glass jar of at least 1-liter capacity (previously scalded with boiling water and dried), place the orange wedges, zest, cinnamon sticks, split vanilla beans, star anise, and cloves.
-
Pour: Add the liquid cane sugar, then pour in all the rum to cover the ingredients.
-
Mix: Seal the jar tightly and shake gently to fully dissolve and combine the sugar.
β³ Maceration Time & Tips
-
Duration: Let it steep away from direct light at room temperature for a minimum of 3 to 4 weeks (ideally 1 to 2 months).
-
Care: Shake the jar gently once a week.
-
Finishing touch: Before gifting, you can strain the rum through a fine-mesh sieve or a coffee filter to remove the pulp, then transfer it into a decorative gift bottle. Feel free to leave a fresh cinnamon stick and a vanilla bean inside for an elegant presentation.
